My Morning Jacket One Big Holiday
January 31-February 4, 2015

Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya
Puerto Aventuras, Mexico

After an incredible inaugural year for One Big Holiday in 2014, My Morning Jacket returned to Mexico for round 2 in 2015! This time they brought along even more special guests including
Band Of Horses, Dr. Dog, The War on Drugs, Dawes, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Sylvan Esso, and Biz Markie. We were treated to 3 blistering My Morning Jacket shows which featured some very memorable sit-ins, exciting song debuts, and amazing cover song selections. To top everything off, the event fell on Super Bowl Sunday and we enjoyed the greatest football party in the world, complete with a delicious spread curated by Chef Edward Lee!

Day 1 got off to an excellent start guests arrived at the resort with the energy level already high! The sun was shining, and we knew we were onto something special as we began to see familiar faces from last year and got settled into the Hard Rock. The War on Drugs held honor of kicking off the music, and did so in fine fashion including treating the Concert Courtyard to many songs off their recently released album, Lost in a Dream. After songs like “Red Eyes” and “Under the Pressure” helped set the tone, it was time for My Morning Jacket to get right into things with their first show of One Big Holiday. It was all smiles when the band opened up with Christopher Cross’ “Ride Like the Wind” and Jim James sang “And I’ve got such a long way to go, to get to the border of Mexico…”. Following that was an additional 24 song set which not only included the live debut of “Big Decisions”, but also saw sit-ins from Adam Granduciel (The War on Drugs) and Amelia Meath (Sylvan Esso) for Mazzy Star’s “Fade into Me” and rocking versions of “It Beats 4 U”, “Run Thru” and other classics. The party kept going as we enjoyed some late night Sylvan Esso, bringing their feel-good dance vibes for us to enjoy under the Mexican moonlight.

Waking up on the second day was like waking up from a dream, only this seemingly My Morning Jacket mirage was indeed really happening! After an afternoon enjoying some pool time, tequila tastings, and other resort activities, it was time to enjoy our One Big Football Party! Chef Edward Lee joined the fun to help curate a delicious BBQ and pig roast right there on the beach for us. We came together to watch the game of the year on big screen projectors as the sun set right beside us. Talk about a pre-show party!

One Big Holiday favorites Preservation Hall Jazz Band then took the stage right after the game, and brought their old school New Orleans sound to the tropics. It then didn’t take long for the collaborations to continue, as Jim James came out to sing a number with the PHJB, adding to the friendly trend of musicianship that would continue over the following days. My Morning Jacket then followed up with yet another barn burner for their 2nd show of the trip, which again featured live song debuts in the form of “Compound Fracture”, collaborations with Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Conor Oberst, Ben Bridwell (Band of Horses),  and once again Amelia Meath. Following an extended, eclectic encore, the show wrapped up with “Gideon” and sent us grooving all the way to the soon to start Patrick Hallahan DJ set late night party!

The third day of One Big Holiday was again action packed, filled with plenty of sunshine and great times around the resort. Those who weren’t enjoying frozen drinks out by the pool, were out on excursions, or some participating in activities such as the regionally appropriate Guacamole Making Contest

As the night took over, it was time to get back to more music, and tonight it was Dr. Dog and Band of Horses providing the tunes! Dr. Dog brought their Philly musical charm to Mexico, and layed down hooks and solos that made it impossible not to feel good when hearing. It was then Band of Horse’s turn to take us on a musical journey, and did so with crowd favorites “No One’s Gonna Love You”, “Weed Party”, and “The Funeral” as well as deeper cuts like “Laredo” and a cover of Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise.”

Day 4 of One Big Holiday was bittersweet, knowing it was our final day in paradise while still going full steam ahead into the day! Things got exciting out by the pool as Bo Koster and Tom Blankenship of My Morning Jacket came out to join fans at the “Derby Party”, a collection of quirky games and prize giveaways. One of the things that makes One Big Holiday so special is the intimacy of the event, and activities like the Derby Party which brings fans artists together. Soon after our fun in the sun had ended, it was time for Band Of Horses to play yet another show, this one acoustic and during the beautiful Mayan sunset. The band was in great spirits, interacting with the crowd and perfuming requests including “Detlef Schrempf” and “Older”, before teasing jams of the event’s flagship song, One Big Holiday. Just a taste of what was to come…

My Morning Jacket came on stage for their third and final show of the week with fury, opening up with “Victory Dance,” much to the pleasure of the crowd. This show will go down as one of the more memorable in Jacket’s rich live history, complete with Conor Oberst sit-ins of tunes like Bright Eyes’ “Another Travelin Song” and “At the Bottom of Everything”, Ben Bidwell singing duet with Jim James on “Wonderful”, Taylor Goldsmith coming back onstage for a rowdy version of The Rolling Stone’s “Happy”. Some of the magic was saved for the encore, however, as the band launched into a 1-2 punch of the Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” and “Rock & Roll”, before eventually getting into a “Rainy Day Women #12 & 35” with practically every musician from the whole week onstage! Predictable, but never unwelcome, the band then fired up another blazing “One Big Holiday” to officially wrap up the music out on the MainStage. What a run it was. The evening then concluded with a Biz Markie DJ set.

After the word spread and hype caught on, the event sold out in 2015, creating even stronger bonds among our One Big Family! The sunshine, the music, the people, the vibe, everything was right in line for us. Thanks for an unforgettable 4 days in Mexico!
